Farrell finished off its perfect 2018 season with a 55-20 win over Lackawanna Trail on Thursday afternoon.

The Steelers won their first state championship since 1996 and became the first Mercer County school since the state playoffs started in 1988 to post an undefeated record.

Christian Lewis scored five times and Kyi Wright ran in two and threw for another (to Jourdan Townsend).

The Steelers fumbled the opening kickoff, leading to a Lackawanna Trail’s Ray Melnikoff’s touchdown run in the opening minute of the game.

Farrell answered very quickly on the next drive, with Christian Lewis scoring a 40-yard touchdown run, tying the game at 7-7 with 10:52 still remaining in the first quarter.

Lewis found the end zone two more times in the first half — another first-quarter run from 20 yards out and a 52-yard dash in the opening minutes of the second frame — to give Farrell a 21-7 advantage. From there, Jourdan Townsend caught an 18-yard six point strike from Kyi Wright to extend the lead to 27-7 midway through the second quarter.

As the Steelers poured it on, Wright raced 56-yards to pay dirt to score Farrell’s third touchdown within a four-minute time period.

Once again, at the end of the first half, Wright found the end zone. His third touchdown (two rushing, one passing) was from three yards away with 33 seconds left.

Farrell completed a dominant first half to put the Steelers up 42-7.

First half stats

…Farrell gained 294 rushing yards on 20 carries (14.7 avg). The Steelers totaled 380 yards of offense compared to just 101 for Lackawanna Trail. The Steelers forced three turnovers.

Farrell began the second half, where they left off. Lewis scored his fourth touchdown of the day on a seven-yard scamper, which put the dynamic back over 2,400-yards for the season.

As the fourth quarter began, the Farrell faithful saw Lewis scored his fifth touchdown of the day and the lead erupted to 48-points. The Steelers allowed two late touchdowns but were crowned champions following their 55-20 victory.

Lackawanna Trail finishes the season with a 14-2 mark.
