Perennial power West Middlesex pushes on without 2 top scorers

Sports

Under coach Chad Mild, West Middlesex continues to be not only a perennial power in the area but also within the state of Pennsylvania. The Big Reds have won 6 of the last 7 region championships and have finished the season with 20-wins or more in as many years (6 of the last 7). This year, Mild must replace his top two scorers (Marshall Murray & Chase Staunch) to get his Big Reds’ back to the top of the region.

Strengths

Five key senior letter winners will be welcomed back as Casey Mild and Rocco Davano return in the backcourt and Zach Long, Jake Bowen and Kaz Hoffman will take their forward positions. Mild shot 69.3% from the foul line (61-88) as he also averaged 8.1 points and 1.8 assists per contest. Davano connected on 13 of 17 free throws last winter for a team-high 76.5%. Long led West Middlesex in shooting from the floor (59.3%) as well as hauling down 5.1 boards and finishing fifth on the team in scoring (7.7). Bowen scored a team-high 8.5 points among returning players. Bowen also had 2.7 rebounds and shot 54.2% from the floor (90-166). Hoffman stepped beyond the arc to shoot 32.6% (15-46) as well as averaging 3.3 points per outing. “The team has shown great chemistry,” states coach Mild. “That’s our biggest strength.”

Area of Concern

One can pinpoint a weakness to finding adequate scoring options with the graduation of both their top scorer (Marshall Murray) and their second leading scorer (Chase Staunch) a year ago. Murray averaged 12 points per game and shot 33.6% from three-point land (80-238). He also connected on 69.4% from the free throw stripe (34-49). Staunch put together a strong stat line of 9.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists while shooting 33.3% beyond the arc (35-104) and 70.9% from the charity line (73-103). “We need to improve our team rebounding,” Mild says. “Rebounding is the key.”
