LOWELLVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) – Last year was a special season for Rocket basketball. Lowellville won 20 games, were the only team to defeat Campbell (53-49) during the regular season and advanced to the District Championship.

The Rockets lost Kyle Miller (4.2 ppg) and Justin Beeson (6.8 ppg) to graduation from that team. “We have everyone else back,” states coach Matt Olson. “We have six guys that started at some point last season in Anthony Lucente (16.3 ppg, 7.8 rpg), Vinny Ballone (15.6 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.8 apg, 2.3 spg), Brady Bunofsky (10.1 ppg, 6.2 rpg), Mark Dubos, Ryan Hvisdak and Michael Ballone. Our expectations are to win the league and district [titles], that doesn’t change.”

Lowellville was able to win by scoring above 60 points (11-1) and as well as in tight games by 10-points or less (7-3), a year ago. Four players shot over 36% from three-point range led by DuBos (42.9%) and Lucente (41.1%).

“Last year, we fell a little short,” indicates Olson. “We’re hungry to accomplish our goals this season. Anthony, Vinny and Brady will be our captains. We expect them to provide leadership both on-and-off the court. With this year’s group, we expect all five guys on the floor to be a threat offensively from any spot. We also expect to be able to switch up our defense seamlessly and flawlessly. If we play as a group and avoid being predictable, we’ll have success.”

The Rockets are set to open the 2022-23 season by playing host to Crestview.
