Horizon League leaders UIC quiet YSU bats in series opening loss

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN)-The YSU softball team was held scoreless thru 6 innings Friday night against the Horizon League leaders UIC, eventually falling to the Flames 6-2.

UIC opened the scoring in the first inning scoring on a passed ball to make it 1-0.

The Flames increased the lead in the 3rd when Skylee James doubled home Cassie Kaelber to make it 2-0.

YSU was held without a hit until the 4th inning when Grace Cea registered the first hit of the day for the Penguins.

They would load the bases in the inning but failed to bring a run home.

UIC would add 3 more in the 5th and another in the 7th.

YSU plated their only runs in the 7th inning off a Lexi Zappitelli triple.

Mathews grad Addy Jarvis got the start for the Penguins going 4.1 IP, allowing 7 hits, 5 runs (4 earned) and 4 strikeouts.

The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1PM
