SHARON, Pennsylvania (WKBN) – The Sharon Tigers improved in almost every category last year from the prior season by scoring an average of 7-points more, allowing nearly 12-points less and gaining over 40-yards per game.

Jason McElhaney enters his fourth season at the helm of the Tiger program. He returns plenty of playmakers on offense led by their senior quarterback Mikey Rodriques. Number 4 connected on 54.3% of his passes (100-184) for 1560 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also gained 215 yards on the ground and scored an additional five times.

“This will be the first time since Lane Voytik in 2019 that Sharon has had a returning starter at quarterback,” indicates McElhaney. “The experience gained in 2021 is invaluable to Mikey’s development and we expect him to take a big step forward.”

Jayveerh White, the team’s leading rusher, averaged 10.8 yards per tote (56 attempts, 602 yards) while scoring 7 times.

“From a skill perspective,” says coach McElhaney. “We expect Jayveerh, Cortez Nixon, CC Harrison and Lamont Austin to play large roles in the offense. Up front, Mikey Mazurek will be in his third year as a starter and will anchor us. Austin Perlik and Ryan Resele will be in their second years as starters [along the offensive line].”

Defensively, the Tigers lost their top four tacklers but do return Mikey Mazurek – who led the returnees with 33 tackles. Labron Wilder finished with 3 quarterback sacks as Austin Perlik (26 tackles) also picked up a pair of takedowns on the opposing signal caller.

McElhaney points out, “Our expectation is that players such as Bryson Roberson, Isaac Friday, Mister Ham and Cortez Nixon will fill the roles left by graduation losses at linebacker. Lamont Austin and Angelo Fromm will see expanded roles in the secondary. Brodie Miller and Dre Norris will also see their roles [increase] on the defensive line. We’re pleased by the improvement at times last year, but we want to become more consistent [this season.”

Sharon, who returns eighteen letter winners, opens the season against the always tough Neshannock Lancers on the road in week one.
