YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – On December 21, former Boardman coach Seth Antram stepped down from his position after one year (4-5) to take over as the Cowboys’ head man. Antram served as Chaney’s offensive coordinator prior to last season at Boardman.

“My expectations are to put a disciplined, energetic, physically and mentally tough team on the field this fall,” states Antram. “Our guys have been through a lot together since Chaney brought athletics back [in 2019]. These seniors have been a huge part of what we’re trying to establish here. I expect [we’ll] compete every game we play. If we compete and stay focused good things will come for these guys.”

Coach Antram inherits an offense which saw freshman Matt Jones throw for over 600-yards (653) and 7 touchdowns a year ago. He also led the team in rushing with 1009 yards and 10 touchdowns.

“Matt played really well last year,” says Antram. “Obviously, the plan was to give him more time to grow and develop last year, but as things turned out, he ended up starting most of the year as a freshman. Those reps he got will really help him in the future as a football player and especially as a quarterback at the varsity level.”

The team will welcome back a dynamic playmaker in receiver DJ Waller – who caught 20 passes a year ago for 322 yards and 5 touchdowns. Keivon Mitchell and LeBron Donlow each snagged 10 and 9 balls. Malik Hunter, Jason Hewlett, Jawan Freeman, Jawann Harmon and Jason Amill-Austin will all be looked upon to produce from their skill position spots.

Saion Ivey, Triston LaFlore and Jaheim Jackson will anchor the offensive front.

The defense lost their two edge rushers in Clive Wilson (13 QB sacks) and JR Tellington (11 QB sacks). “You don’t replace two guys like that,” points out Antram. “We expect everyone to step up and help fill the voids left by those two. Jawan Freeman (11 TFLs) is back, and we’ll rely on him heavily on defense along with LeBron [Donlow], DJ [Waller], [Jason] Hewlett and Elijah Carter. We have [several] guys we expect to have a big impact for us. JJ [Jaquan Johnson] will be an important player this fall as well as Jason Amill-Austin, Saion Ivey, Jawan Harmon and Jaheim Jackson.”

Chaney returns sixteen letter winners from 2021.

The Cowboys open the season on the road at Poland on Thursday, August 18.
