Haas & Fire highlight 7 returning letter winners for Mooney

Sports

Last year, Mooney opened up the 2017-18 season with an 0-6 record. However, that mark is misleading as only one of those contests were decided by 10-points or more. The Cardinals finished 5-17 although they were involved in 13 games which were by single digits (5-8). “(Last season), we played in six overtime games,” points out coach Palermo. “we lost 6 games where we led in the fourth quarter. We’d like to see this team finish those games. That starts with our senior leadership.”

Strengths

“We have a lot of experience returning,” indicates Palermo. “We have seven letter winners back and this is the third year in our system for eight of our top nine guys.” The senior class includes Pete Haas, Anthony Fire, Johnnie Mikos, Terrell Brown, Mark Phillips, and Johnny Murphy. Haas (13.5 ppg) and Fire (10.7 ppg) both averaged double-digits. Haas connected on 28% of his three-point shots (41-148) and 65% from the foul line (48-74). Fire led the team in rebounding (7.1) and field goal percentage (48.6%). Mikos put together a stat line of 4.4 points, 1.8 assists, 1.3 steals a year ago. Brown (6.3 ppg, 70.8% FT), Phillips (48.1% FG) and Murphy (2.5 apg, 1.2 spg) will be asked to improve upon last year’s numbers. Sonny Rodriguez returns for his junior year along with newcomers Matt Brennan (JR) and Mike Pelini (SO).

Area of Concern

The Cardinals lost Vince Gentile and Jordan Stanford. Even with a 5-win team, those are significant losses in terms of key cogs to the group’s success over the past couple of years. Gentile averaged 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists while shooting 46.4% from the floor (26-56). Stanford was the Cardinals’ 4th top scorer (5.6 ppg) while making 31.3% from the long distance (25-80). Mooney must take care of the ball better (15.9 turnovers per game) and shoot the 3-point basket a better rate (28.4%) this year.
