Going for gold: East Rugby eyes second straight championship

Sports

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Just over a year ago, the East Rugby Team capped off a banner season, winning a Division II championship in its first year of existence.

The Golden Bears have their sights set on going back-to-back.

East is one of sixteen CLUB teams in Ohio and Pennsylvania that have qualified for the playoffs. They’ll start their postseason run Friday night at home.

The Golden Bears are 6-0-1 and seeded seventh heading into Friday night’s first-round action against #9 Northwestern.

“We’re very motivated,” said Junior Timmy Bowser. “When there’s a lot of pressure on our back, a lot of pressure, we just kept going through it. And, with the undefeated season, it gave us a lot of inspiration, and a lot of motivation to keep going on.”

East and Northwestern will meet in postseason action Friday at 7 p.m. at Rayen Stadium.
