High school wrestling took center stage Wednesday night in our WKBN Game of the Week. Canfield and Austintown Fitch, two of the most storied programs in the Valley, took to the mat LIVE on WKBN.com, the WKBN mobile app and myYTV.
It was the first high school wrestling broadcast we’ve ever done.
All signs pointed to an absolutely electric atmosphere in Canfield on Wednesday evening as we shone the spotlight on two of the premier high school wrestling programs in the area.
These two have certainly developed a heated rivalry in recent seasons.
Of course, Canfield has finished the last three years as the state runner-up. However, Fitch had defeated the Cardinals in each of the last three seasons, so both of those trends were at stake on high school wrestling’s biggest stage.
“It’s two historic programs. Two of the better teams in the area that are very well-coached. We think we’re pretty well-coached,” Canfield Head Coach Stephen Pitts said before the match. “They have good kids, we do. It’s rare to see such evenly matched teams. A lot of times in wrestling, you get some big blowouts and things like that. So when you know that somebody is coming to compete, it raises the level quite a bit.”
The entire game will be posted soon.
