Freshman phenom: YSU’s Jarvis K’s her way to the record books

YSU Freshman Softball standout Addy Jarvis has made an IMMEDIATE impact in her first season in the college ranks. Yesterday, the Mathews graduate broke the program’s single-season strikeout record. AND she likewise became the first player in school history to record at least 200 strikeouts in a season.

“I didn’t ever feel like a strikeout pitcher,” Jarvis admitted. “And it’s weird to feel like I have been striking out that many because I don’t notice it during the game.”

Jarvis might not feel like a strikeout pitcher. But she is one. She broke the single-game record this year with 15 strikeouts against Niagara. Then, three weeks later, she broke it again…striking out 16 against Northern Kentucky.

“I didn’t even realize that I was doing that,” said Jarvis. “I don’t notice. And I think it’s just because I get so much adrenaline in each game, like I don’t care. I really don’t. As long as we, if we get one run, I’m like OK we’re going to win this game.”

Jarvis not only broke the single season school record this year. She also leads the entire Horizon League in strikeouts as a freshman. She says that it’s NOT about chasing K’s. It’s about executing pitches… and hitting her spots.

“Yea I don’t always think just strikeout, strikeout, strikeout,” she said. “It’s more of like just don’t let her hit this ball. She’s not going to hit this ball. I mean that’s basically what it is. I’ve always had the… this girl can’t hit it. She’s not going to hit it,” added Jarvis.

And when they don’t even swing, that frozen look of confusion is even more rewarding. Jarvis also leads the conference in called strikeouts.

“It surprises me sometimes because I’m just like, I feel like there’s such aggressive batters. So then when they strike out looking I’m just like, it just shocks me a little like and I do think it’s like the surprise that no one knows what’s coming.”
