Fitch’s defense (and special teams) played a key role down the stretch to notch a crucial 21-20 victory over rival-Boardman. The Falcons have now won 4 of their last 5 games to notch their 7th win of the season.
The Spartans snapped a 2-game losing skid against Ursuline (38-14) last week. Despite their efforts, Boardman drops to 5-4.
After averaging just 26 points per game over their last 5 meetings, Fitch and Boardman scored 21 points in the opening quarter tonight. Fitch leads 14-7 at the end of the first frame.
Boardman’s defense recovered another fumble deep in Falcon territory. From there, Mike O’Horo ran in the game-tying touchdown with 4:46 remaining in the first half (14-14).
Much like in the opening quarter, Fitch got on the board first again in the second half – thanks to Roddell Bebbs – to take a 7-point lead (21-14). Back came the Spartans as O’Horo ran in his second touchdown on the day. However, Boardman missed the point after kick to keep Fitch ahead by 1 (21-20) with 4:56 left in the third quarter.
Late in the 4th quarter, Boardman was inside the red zone but the Falcons defense stiffened – and special teams came up big with a blocked kick – as they held the Spartans from accumulating more points.
Next week, Boardman travels to Lakeside while Fitch welcomes Mooney.
