BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Boardman Spartans canceled their final varsity football game against Chaney this Friday after several coaches tested positive for COVID-19.
The junior varsity game for Saturday is also canceled.
“A total of five of our off-staff coaches are affected and the remainder of the coaching staff has been quarantined as a precaution stemming from one incident of viewing film over the weekend,” said Athletic Director Marco Marinucci.
Boardman Local Schools said the district is working closely with the Mahoning County Board of Health to figure out if any more quarantines are necessary.
Superintendent Tim Saxton said contact tracing ended up taking five coaches out of the mix.
“When we sat down and did the contact tracing, following protocols, we went back through the timeframe and who was with them for 15 to 16 minutes or more, we went back to a film session they had last weekend where there [were] seven coaches in this room,” Saxton said.
Two tested positive and the others will be quarantined for 14 days.
“That leaves us with hardly anyone left for the game,” Saxon said. “That leaves us with no choice but to cancel Friday’s game and Saturday’s JV game.”
Saxton said the matchup was not a playoff game and at this point, they are going to call the season and there won’t be a reschedule of the game.
Saxton said so far, no students have tested positive.
