YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – John Barnes has decided to remain as Youngstown State University Women’s Basketball Coach after recently receiving an offer from Kent State University for the same position.

He informed his YSU players of the decision Sunday morning.

Barnes recently completed his third season with the Penguins, leading them to a record of 57-40 during his tenure.

For this first time in program history, the Youngstown State women’s basketball team advanced to a postseason tournament in consecutive years. Barnes followed up last year’s at-large berth into the Women’s NIT with a spot in the WBI in 2016.

YSU finished in the top four of the Horizon League standings and advanced to the semifinals in each of his first two years.

Barnes set a school record for wins by a first-year head coach (15), and he has the second-best winning percentage by a YSU coach.
