Last-second field goal lifts Fitch as time expires over rival

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Josiah’ Berni’s 26-yard field goal as time expired lifted Austintown Fitch past Boardman 17-14 Friday night in the WKBN High School Football Game of the Week.

Fitch has now won six straight head-to-head meetings against Boardman.

The Falcons took a 14-0 lead into the locker room but ultimately needed a field goal as time expired to hold off the charging Spartans, 17-14.

Tyree Mitchell got the Falcons on the board early in the second quarter after both teams were scoreless through one. The four-yard run gave Fitch a 7-0 lead with 8:52 left in the first half. Mitchell finished with 45 rushing yards on the night.

Fellow running back D.J. Williams added 50 yards on the ground in the win.

With 2:33 left in the second quarter, Devin Sherwood connected with Donnie Ellis for a 42-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 14-0. Sherwood completed 15-18 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown for the Falcons.

The Falcons had a prime opportunity to add to the lead late in the half, but an attempt to spike the ball on the Boardman one-yard line with one second left came too late, and time expired.

Cam Thompson’s 36-yard punt return for a touchdown put Boardman on the board late in the third quarter. With just under three minutes to play in the third, the Spartans trailed 14-7.

Joe Sferra dove on a loose football to score a touchdown via fumble recovery for the Spartans midway through the fourth quarter. After a successful extra point attempt, it was tied up at 14-14.

Tyler Evans caught four passes for 72 yards and a touchdown.

Austintown Fitch (5-3) will finish the season with a trip to Warren Harding in week ten. Boardman (4-4) will play host to Canfield.
