YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown has four new firefighters who were sworn-in Tuesday morning at the downtown fire station.

Most of the salary and benefits for the new hires will be provided over the next three years through a federal grant.

The department now has a staff of 127, according to Fire Chief John O’Neill.

“With that, we’ll see a real big decline in the overtime need and also, we’ll be able to keep all 10 of the trucks open in the city,” he said.

Youngstown Councilwoman Anita Davis added that Youngstown is in the top percentage of cities in terms of fire safety, which shows in its insurance coverage.

During Tuesday’s ceremony, April Edwards was also promoted to chief fire inspector.
