SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – On Saturday, Real Life Church held its eighth annual Warm-Up Salem — giving warm winter coats to anybody that needed them — while new nonprofit Project Brightside took to the streets for its first giveaway.

Some of the coats were donated to Real Life, but most of them were bought by the church. An event organizer said that most people who came to the event walked away with more than just a coat.

“We are able to just provide them with a coat, some hats, gloves [and] we also have some hot soup and coffee and burgers and dogs,” said Jim Dotson, lead pastor at Real Life Church.

In addition to clothes and food, there was also a free health screening. Blood pressure and blood sugar levels were also checked and toothbrushes were given out.

Meanwhile, Project Brightside set up its trucks and met with families in the Salem area, giving away helpful and fun items to kids in need.

“There is toothpaste and toothbrushes donated by a local dentist here in Salem,” said founder Scott Lewis. “We have granola bars, fruit juice boxes and bottled water.”

In addition to the gift bags, kids could also get their face painted.

Lewis said that his main goal is to get out into the community and get to know the people who he’s helping.
