Regional Chamber asking Amazon to consider Howland site for headquarters

HOWLAND TWP., Ohio (WKBN) – Amazon is a name everyone recognizes and now the company wants to build a second headquarters somewhere in the U.S. Leaders in the Mahoning Valley say it should be here and they’re getting involved in the process.

If you thought attracting Vallourec was big, getting Amazon to the Valley could be even bigger.

“It’s David and Goliath,” said Warren City Council President Jim Graham.

The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber announced it will submit a site in Howland Township to Amazon for consideration to build the company’s second headquarters.

The preferred site to entice Amazon is Enterprise Park — 105 acres next to the Eastwood Mall with good highway access, existing utilities, walkability, and the potential to expand.

The site was chosen after conversations with Trumbull County Board of Commissioners Chairman Frank Fuda, Mahoning County Board of Commissioners Chairman Dave Ditzler, Warren Mayor Doug Franklin, and Youngstown Mayor John McNally, according to a news release from the regional chamber.

“The Enterprise Park meets more requirements than the remainder so it is the best of what we have to offer,” said Senior Vice President of the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber Sarah Boyarko. “It does not meet all of the requirements but it does meet those which are important to the company.”

Where the property falls short is being within 45 minutes of an international airport and a 30-minute drive to a major metro area. There is also no direct access to a population of 1 million or greater.

“All we can do is try. I think that’s what the people want to see us do. Try,” Graham said.

Boyarko said since they have space that meets a good amount of the requirements, they’re going to submit it and see what happens.

“We simply don’t know what it could lead to, if not this opportunity.”

The chamber is submitting the property for consideration to Team NEO and JobsOhio, which has an existing relationship with Amazon.

The company wants up to 8 million square feet — six times as big as the Eastwood Mall — and expects to spend $5 billion on the headquarters.

Amazon announced last month that it was seeking a location for the second headquarters in North America. It said the new campus will bring 50,000 new jobs over 10 to 15 years.

“You’re talking 50,000 jobs. I don’t think we have 50,000 jobs in Trumbull County and these jobs, they contribute $53 billion a year just in salary,” Graham said.

The headquarters would be a duplication of its headquarters in Seattle, which has 33 buildings.

Submissions are due to Amazon by October 19 and the company will choose and announce the location in 2018.

Ohio is getting two Amazon fulfillment centers, which are basically warehouses and distribution centers.

Editor’s note: The chosen property is in Howland Township, not Niles, as previously reported. WKBN regrets the error.
