Police kill armed man who threatened hostage at pizza shop

Lancaster police responded to initial reports of a robbery and said the suspect, Troy Kirk, 31, held a knife to a woman’s throat

LANCASTER, Ohio (AP) — A police officer shot and killed a man who was holding an Ohio pizza shop employee hostage at knifepoint and threatening to hurt her, authorities said.

Other employees fled the building and no one else was hurt during the half-hour, lunchtime confrontation on Saturday at Cristy’s Pizza in Lancaster, roughly 30 miles (48 kilometers) southeast of Columbus.

Lancaster police responded to initial reports of a robbery and said the suspect, Troy Kirk, 31, held a knife to a woman’s throat. The Lancaster man didn’t cooperate with attempts by police to deescalate the situation, and an officer fired at Kirk to end the situation when the opportunity presented itself, Deputy Chief Dan Shupp said.

Police indicated the hostage didn’t know Kirk, the Lancaster Eagle Gazette reported.

Cristy’s wouldn’t comment on what happened, aside from a statement asking that people keep its employees in their thoughts and prayers.

The shooting will be reviewed to confirm whether officers followed relevant policies and protocols.
