DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A premature baby, born 11 years ago, returned to Miami Valley Hospital Friday for a very special birthday reunion with his former nursing care team.
Wearing a shirt reading, “I was born on 1-11, I weighed 1-11, and today, I’m 11,” Joshua Day celebrated what staff are calling a “milestone birthday.”
Born January 11, 2008, he spent the first weeks of his life inside Miami Valley Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. He weighed a tiny 1 pound, 11 ounces.
“That’s his little hand on daddy’s hand,” his mother Amy Day said sharing a picture of Joshua, shortly after his birth. “We put daddy’s wedding ring up to his shoulder, one day.”
And 11 years later, he went back.
“This is very cool!” Joshua declared.
His father Scott Day said they decided to celebrate his “platinum” 11th birthday so they could reunite with the nurses who cared for Joshua and say thanks.
“It’s not so much just, ‘Here’s your gift and Happy Birthday.’ We wanted to really give him the opportunity to say thank you a group that invested a lot in him,” he said.
Miami Valley Hospital NICU Nurse Elisabeth Zimmerman says she’s grateful she got another chance to see Joshua, especially how much he’s grown and thrived since his early beginnings.
“To see what he’s like, all grown up, it means a lot to me,” she said.
So much so, that the staff has T-shirts with Joshua’s foot and hand prints on them, and a tiny picture of him, when he was just a tiny baby.
