Texas family reunited with missing puppies after storm destroys home

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Texas (CNN) – Severe weather hammered Texas Saturday, leaving extensive damage behind and leading to at least two deaths.

Sandra Verdell and her husband, Byron, never thought it would happen to them and destroy the place that they’ve called home for 18 years.

“… I just covered up, and I was praying, and then a big board back there in the back yard like shielded me,” said Byron Verdell.

“I heard my husband jump on the trailer and he was like, ‘Where are you?’ and I’m like, ‘I’m buried up under all this stuff,” Sandra said.

While Sandra was searching for her husband, their 10-year-old terrier, Bella, was sniffing out her own search for the tiniest members of their family.

Two of her puppies were found, but two others were still missing.

Byron, Sandra and Bella searched through the rubble, eventually finding the two remaining puppies.

After the storm, their belongings and keepsakes were submerged in a swamp.

“It is what it is. Can’t stop God’s work, so, just gotta take the bitter with the sweet,” Byron said.

This family’s resilience is shining through and will continue as they rebuild from the rubble.

The Verdell family said they are thankful for those who came to help, and they have no idea what their next steps will be.
