GATESVILLE, Texas (KXAN) — One person is dead and 12 injured after an explosion at Coryell Memorial Hospital in Gatesville, Texas, hospital officials said Tuesday.
The incident, believed to be a construction accident in the back of the hospital, happened at 2:15 p.m. Officials said people were evacuated from the hospital immediately.
No patients, staff members or long-term care residents were injured in the blast. Those injured were all construction workers.
“It was a tremendous blast. It felt like a bomb going off,” a hospital official said.
The explosion knocked out power to about 900 surrounding homes and businesses.
Gatesville is located north of Fort Hood and about 36 miles west of Waco.
Scott & White Medical Center in Temple and Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Hillcrest have activated their emergency operation centers and are preparing to receive and treat patients.
