WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – The heroin epidemic is hitting Trumbull County hard, so the county is doubling down by investing in recovery.

The First Step Recovery Detox and Treatment Center, the Northeast Ohio Recovery Housing Alliance and community leaders hosted a legislative meeting Thursday morning where they talked about what can be done to improve the standards of recovery housing.

One solution was to pay two months’ rent for people staying at one of nine accredited recovery houses in the area.

April Caraway works with the Trumbull County Mental Health and Recovery Board, she said focusing on these homes is key.

“The recovery homes are critical to our system of care because once somebody gets detoxed, that may only last eight days and they may not have a home to go to. We don’t want them maybe going back to the environment they came from, because they might use again,” she said.

Caraway also said recovery homes, when done right, give people the stability and support they need to prevent a relapse.
