Officers were investigating the shooting death of a man in his 40s when they were called to another shooting on Edwards Avenue

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — City police detectives were on their hands and knees in the yard of a South Side home Thursday where a man was shot and killed late Wednesday looking for evidence when they were called to another shooting.

Detectives responded about 10:15 a.m. to the 300 block of Edwards Avenue just past High Street, where a man in a home was wounded in a drive-by shooting.

There were at least 11 shell casings in the street. Several evidence markers were clustered in the front yard next to the front porch steps and the porch themselves, but detectives on the scene would not say if those markers indicated someone returned fire.

The injured man is being treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Just before detectives were called there, they were in the front yard of a home in the 100 block of St. Louis Avenue on their hands and knees looking for shell casings or spent slugs or any evidence they could use in the investigation of a man who was shot to death about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday inside the home.

Detective Sgt. Michael Cox, lead investigator on the case, said someone fired into a side window and killed a man who was inside.

Detectives used a metal detector from the department’s Crime Lab to help them with their search and a pair of interns who are working in the Crime Lab assisted and got some on-the-job training. They used gloves to dig through the grass anywhere the metal detector beeped but they were unable to find anything.

The latest two shootings give the city 37 people shot for the year, nine fatally. At this time last year, Youngstown had seen 27 people shot fatally, including 12 of 13 homicide victims.

Youngstown ended 2020 with 98 people shot overall, including 27 of 28 homicide victims. That was an increase from 2019, when 58 overall were shot, including all 20 of the city’s homicide victims that year.

The identity of the victim in Thursday’s homicide hasn’t been released yet.

Those with information on the case are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 330-746-CLUE. Tips can remain anonymous.
