YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown police are waiting for the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office to confirm the identity of a body found in the Mahoning River Sunday evening.
Kayakers found the body of a man in the river around 8 p.m. A crew from the fire department retrieved the body at Poland Avenue and Walton Street.
Chief of Detectives Capt. Brad Blackburn said detectives believe they know the identity of the man, but they are waiting for the coroner’s office to confirm it.
The body was found face down in the water. Blackburn said there are no obvious signs of trauma on the body but an autopsy must be done to determine the cause of death.
Police on the scene said it appeared the body had been in the water for a couple of days.
This is the second time this year police have investigated after a body was found floating in the river.
In March, the body of a man was found floating in the river near Marshall Street Bridge.
