Those using two of the major corridors in and out of Youngstown are seeing pink.

Sixth Ward Council Member Anita Davis has been painting fire hydrants a bright shade of pink to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

So far she’s painted half-a-dozen hydrants with another 18 or so to go along Market Street, on the city’s south side.

She tells us, in obtaining approval of her idea from the city water department, Davis says her paint scheme will still allow firefighters to distinguish one hydrant from another.

“Some are gonna be pink and yellow, pink and white or solid pink, and that depends upon the water pressure. So we were given, I was given very specific instructions. Don’t seal up the knobs, and always match up the colors,” she said.

Davis says this Saturday she and fellow Council Member Lauren McNally plan to get enough volunteers to paint the hydrants along Glenwood Avenue from Midlothian all the way to Mahoning Avenue.
