Youngstown police are investigating after a young woman was shot and killed at the Victory Estates apartments on Youngstown’s east side.
The Mahoning County Coroner’s Office confirmed that the victim is 24-year-old Crystal Hernandez.
Police were called about 9:26 p.m. Thursday to the McBride Street side of the complex on reports of shots fired.
When officers arrived, they found a woman with a fatal gunshot wound.
Several shell casings were found in the area.
The victim’s uncle, Christian Ramos, said Hernandez is the mother of a 2-year-old boy. He said the boy was inside the apartment complex at the time of the shooting but was not harmed.
“My younger brother came to my house and he basically told me that she got killed. I still couldn’t believe it. I thought he was joking around,” Ramos said. “I’m shocked. I’m angry. I’m just feeling like I’m not here. I’m feeling like I am just in a bad dream and I just need to wake up,” Ramos said.
Ramos spent several hours at the Youngstown Police Station looking for answers but hasn’t heard any details. He said his niece was a good mother and that he just can’t believe she is gone and in such a violent way.
“I want to know what happened. I want to know the details. I want to know why my niece is dead at 24 years old. She left a beautiful baby boy behind,” Ramos said. “I’m angry inside. I want to punch something, and I am just overwhelmed. I have a lot of mixed emotions, and I still just can’t believe it.”
Ramos said Hernandez was a good mother with a big heart.
Police have not released any details at this time and have not named any suspects.
