WATCH: Boardman Plaza along Route 224 underwater

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Strong storms and heavy rain in the Valley Tuesday flooded Boardman again.

From 4:30 until around 8 p.m., a line of heavy rain parked itself along Route 224 from Poland all the way to Canfield. Every one of those three communities reported flooding issues. The worst appears to be in Boardman and Canfield.

One of the hardest hit areas was along Route 224 in front of Boardman Plaza between Glenwood and Locust avenues. It was a lake from the front of the plaza, across 224 to the businesses on the other side.

When vehicles moved through, they created waves that rippled up the parking lots on either side.

Despite the high water, small cars tried to make their way through. That part of the road was eventually shut down.  At least four cars got stuck.

“I was coming down 224 to go to Canfield and I just came past this giant puddle, you can call it, and I just couldn’t drive anymore,” said Alex Maxin, of Canfield. “I felt like my car was about to be swept away.”

Water continued to flow down Locust Avenue, heading north.

“I was trying to get up 224 to Walgreens to pick up pictures,” Wendy Kelso said. “I saw that it was blocked so I tried to get around, and I went up the wrong side street and after I made it through a river, I was like, ‘No, I’m not about to get my car stuck.’ So I’m going to stay on higher land and just kind of stay where I’m at.”

A plastic barrier that was in the parking lot of the Boardman Plaza floated into the middle of 224.

At least one store in the Boardman Plaza — the UPS Store — got water inside.

Boardman Administrator Jason Loree is asking people to stay off the roads Tuesday night.

Route 224 just east of Lockwood Boulevard was closed, along with Route 165 between Routes 62 and 46.
