The Warren City School District is holding a job fair Tuesday evening. It’s hoping to get plenty of interest from workers who are losing their jobs in Trumbull County as a result of multiple plant closings.
The school district has many positions that are important in meeting children’s needs every day. Some of the most important are in the transportation department.
The district has 25 bus routes but only 18 drivers in the fleet, so it’s using seven subs each day.
“We’re having a very difficult time finding bus drivers, and you talk GM and people that are truck drivers. This may be an opportunity for employment with our district,” said Michael Wasser, executive director of business operations.
Openings also include crossing guards, which meet kids first thing in the morning on streets like Atlantic or Highland.
Noon aides also work directly with the children and watch them grow.
The opportunities are endless.
“In a lot of our areas — maintenance, food service, transportation, clerical, secretarial — those jobs aren’t on year-to-year school year basis. So those jobs are constantly flowing with vacancies,” Superintendent Steve Chiaro said.
The maintenance department allows education to happen in a clean, safe environment.
There’s a need for secretaries and educators, too.
Warren has 450 teachers. Roughly a third missed a day or less but there’s still a need for more substitute teachers.
“It’s critically important because when our kids have someone other than their classroom teacher in front of them each and every day, we know that the level of education is a little less,” Chiaro said.
Some of the positions start on a substitute basis but several people who had started that way said they watched their position turn into everyday employment or even full-time.
“That’s our hope,” Wasser said. “We’re trying to find the best people to be employed here at Warren City. Everyone has an opportunity to get a job here and, possibly, make it a career.”
The Warren City School job fair is Tuesday, February 5, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Applications will be available at the Warren G. Harding Cafetorium at 860 Elm Rd. NE to fill out. You can call the school at 330-841-2321 ext. 7106 for more information.
