Volunteers gather downtown to beautify Niles

NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – A group of community volunteers came together in Niles on Saturday to make the downtown area look a little better.

About two dozen volunteers picked litter and other trash downtown. They focused on areas around the police station, the bike trail and city hall.

They are not part of any established volunteer group, but they were able to get donations of vests and litter grabbers from the city.

Local businesses also donated food for the volunteers.

Organizer Jimmy Julian said it was just people who saw a problem and wanted to fix it.

“Nowadays, a lot of people, it’s real easy for them to go and talk negatively about what they think is wrong with their community, but it takes a lot of effort to actually try to make a change. I think this is a good step for the city of Niles and we’re making the city a better place than it was the day before,” Julian said.

He hopes to make the clean-up a monthly event. He said he will advertise with fliers and social media posts for the next event.
