Truck driver hit by semi, killed at Austintown truck stop

Local News

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A semi truck hit and killed an out-of-state trucker Thursday morning as he was walking in the parking lot behind Pilot Travel Center on Route 46 near I-80.

It happened around 9:20 a.m.

“There were some headphones that were thrown from either his hands or his head laying on the ground where the impact occurred,” said Austintown Police Capt. Bryan Kloss. “His cell phone was laying there, so we don’t know if he was talking on his cell phone or had his headphones in and didn’t hear or see the truck.”

Police said it seemed like the victim stepped out from between parked trucks and the Canadian semi driver didn’t see him.

He died at the scene.

“You gotta keep your head on a swivel at all times because you don’t know what’s coming around the corner,” said truck driver Chris Stiltner. “I mean, anything can happen.”

Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened. It’ll be difficult because there were no witnesses to the accident.

“We just don’t know exactly what he did just prior to the accident,” Kloss said.

The victim’s name hasn’t been released yet. Police are still trying to reach his family.
