The child was taken to the hospital, but is expected to be OK

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A 2-year-old was accidentally shot in the hand Monday, Youngstown police said.

It happened at a home on Lexington Avenue on the city’s north side.

The child was taken to the hospital, but the injury is not life-threatening.

A police report indicates that the children were staying at a family member’s house when it happened. The children’s mother was at work, and a family member was babysitting them.

Family members told police that the gun belonged to a family member who was staying there. The kids told their mother that the gun had been in the couch and that the boy shot himself with it, according to the report.

Police are investigating, and no one has been charged yet.
