BAZETTA TWP., Ohio (WKBN) – A suspect faces multiple charges after calling police on a shooting and car robbery to cover his own crimes, according to a press release.

A Bazetta Twp. police press release said police were dispatched to an address on State Route 5 around 2:20 a.m. on Sunday after a 911 caller stated he had fired three shots at two people who were stealing his car.

“I heard a noise outside I come out they were already in the car. They actually took off down the driveway and I don’t know if this is the right thing to do or not, but I actually capped off a couple of shots at ’em tearing down my driveway and they took off up 305,” said the caller.

Police say a little more than seven hours after reporting the crime, the SUV was found nearby smoldering in the woods by Imagination Station. Investigators say surveillance video from a nearby business shed some light on how the vehicle got there.

“Some subject near the time that he called this in matched the description of the clothing that he was wearing the time that he called us,” said Sgt. Jake Abbott of Bazetta police department.

After an investigation, police determined that the caller committed the crime himself, according to the press release.

The press release states that Michael Hensley, 50, confessed to his crimes in an interview. Police took him into custody and transported him to the Trumbull County Jail on Thursday.

“Admitted that he had done this himself. He’s trying to recoup some of the money maybe because of the vehicle that he bought that was damaged upon purchase,” said Sgt. Abbott.

According to a police report, Hensley told officers he felt the vehicle was unsafe and that he made up the story out of desperation and fear he wouldn’t be able to afford the SUV.

“We felt that when he came in to give his confession that he was genuine you know he was emotional about what he had done seemed remorseful was very concerned about his family,” said Sgt. Abbott.

Hensley’s wife was in court for his arraignment. She didn’t want to speak on camera but told First News he’s a good man.

Hensley is charged with arson and making false alarms. He is set to be in court Friday morning.

The press release said the incident “illustrates the hard work and dedication by the officers who serve and help keep the community a safe place to live and work.”

Hensley is out of jail on a personal recognizance bond. He pleaded not guilty to charges of arson and making false alarms in Central District Court Friday morning.

Hensley is due back in court on January 4th.
