Authorities originally said the object was a homemade pipe bomb. A bomb disposal robot was brought to the scene to detonate the object as a precautionary measure.

However, the detonation revealed the object was not a bomb but an old pipe within a pipe used to store savings bonds. The object was found by new homeowners while cleaning out the basement of a home, according to the Springfield Chief of Police.
