A Youngstown man was arrested over the weekend after police reported witnessing a drug deal in the parking lot of Walmart in Liberty Township.
Friday night, an officer reported seeing two men parked in a Ford Explorer in the lot for an extended period of time, as if they were waiting for someone. About 15 minutes later, police said a white Ford Taurus pulled up next to the men, and a passenger got into the Taurus.
The officer said he observed the passenger give the driver money in exchange for something in a plastic bag.
The officer pulled over the Ford Taurus as it drove by the front entrance of Walmart and questioned the driver, identified as 22-year-old Keith Kennedy.
Police noted that $50 was in the center console of the vehicle, and as Kennedy got out of the car, a bag containing a white rock-like substance consistent with crack cocaine fell to the ground.
Police also spoke with the men in the other vehicle, who confirmed that they bought crack cocaine from Kennedy, according to a police report. Police said the drugs were found in the vehicle.
Frank Mellon, the passenger that the officer said was involved in the exchange, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police said Mellon had text messages on his phone, arranging the drug deal at Walmart.
Kennedy was arrested and charged with drug trafficking, possession of drugs and driving with a suspended license.
