Some Aqua Ohio customers may end up paying more services, but a spokesperson says locally, rates will not be affected.
The Ohio Public Utilities Commission approved Wednesday a 3.66 percent surcharge to customer bills for system improvements.
While Aqua Ohio serves customers in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, local rates are established locally without the PUCO being involved, according to an Aqua Ohio spokesman.
He said Aqua Ohio actually negotiated plans to reduce water rate increases for customers in Mahoning County last year.
The company worked with local elected officials to “rollback” current rates by 4.2 percent. The negotiated rate reduces increases to 3.75 percent in January of 2019, 2020 and 2021.
Last year, Aqua Ohio also announced a 4.2 percent rate reduction for its Struthers Ohio division, which would allow them to “roll back” to the 2017 rates. The proposal affected bills issued from June 1, 2018 through the end of the year.
