BAZETTA TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKBN) – A construction project is shutting down a recreation area at Mosquito Creek Dam.

The Lakeview Recreation Area on Warren Meadville Road (Route 305) in Bazetta Township is closed until further notice.

Heavy equipment and large trucks are being used to bring in materials that will provide erosion protection for the dam, which was built in 1943.

The process is called rip rap and the footprint is being extended closer to the road. It will cover 3,425 feet. The rip rap slows erosion.

“Mother Nature wins in the end. That is what she does, but this allows us to say, ‘Cool, Mother Nature, we would like this dam to continue.’ We’re nearly 80 years old -will be next year. We want that to continue, that lifespan as long as possible,” said Tim Hough, Mosquito Creek resource manager.

The dam is functioning as intended.

Beginning Monday, Nov. 7, State Route 305 between State Route 45 and State Route 5 will be closed through late December. The detour will be State Route 45 to State 82 to State Route 5.
