YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A female passenger in a car Thursday that was sheared in half after it crashed into a pole has died, police said.

The woman, whose name will be released by the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office, was a passenger in her own car that was traveling east on Mahoning Avenue at about 7:40 p.m. when the male driver lost control near South Bon Air Avenue and hit a pole, which sheared the car in half.

The driver is in St. Elizabeth Health Center in stable condition, police said.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but a police spokesman said the car was traveling at a very high rate of speed when it crashed.

Mahoning Avenue was closed from Bouquet to North Bon Air avenues. Bon Air, Wesley, Rhoda, Matta and Bouquet avenues had limited access to Mahoning Avenue.

After the crash, half of the vehicle was in the CVS parking lot, while the other half was in the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles parking lot.
