Organizers of YSU’s Relay for Life event want to spread message of hope

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown State University’s Relay for Life kicked off Saturday afternoon with an opening ceremony and testimony from a cancer survivor.

Teams walked laps in support of those battling cancer.

This year’s theme was “A World with More Birthdays.”

It was held outdoors this year at Farmers National Bank Field at YSU.

Relay for Life is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society but it’s also to remember those who are no longer here.

Student organizers say it’s a show of support.

“Overall, yes, we’re here to raise money, but one of the biggest things that we’re here to do is to create a sense of hope and that sense of support,” said Event Lead Leah Tekac.

The event raised more than $46,000 for the cause.
