YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A man was seriously hurt in a crash in Youngstown Thursday night.
A section of Firnley Avenue near Indianola Avenue was blocked off for a while.
A car was crushed after wrapping around a tree around 7 p.m. The battalion chief said the driver had to have been speeding.
Crews were able to pull the victim out of the car, who was then taken to the hospital.
Police said they were initially called to the scene for shots fired, saying it started on Boston Avenue. Witnesses also reported hearing gunshots around the time of the crash.
Some officers thought the victim’s injuries on his face looked like they could have been caused by a gunshot, so they called for detectives.
Chief of Detectives Capt. Brad Blackburn said he has to wait for doctors to tell him if the man was shot or if he got hurt in the accident. His injuries were so severe that no one there could tell what caused them.
Blackburn said officers did find about 20 shell casings in the area. They couldn’t see any bullet holes on the car but it was so mangled, it was hard to tell, Blackburn said.
