A business which was founded in Mercer over 100 years ago is stopping production.
Nortek Global HVAC, LLC announced it will end production at its Mercer, Pa. plant by September 2019.
The plant currently produces HVAC light commercial products. These products are mainly sold through independent HVAC distributors.
Roughly 110 employees will be impacted over the next 16 months because of the change.
The United Steelworkers union represents around 100 employees at the plant. They are currently in negotiations with the company to determine severance packages and benefits under the union contract, according to a press release.
“Closing a facility is always a very difficult decision because of the impact on our employees and their families,” said Simon Parker, president of Nortek Global HVAC Light Communications. “We understand the impact today’s announcement has on our employees, their families and the community. We are committed to helping employees transition to the next chapter in their careers.
“We have taken several significant steps over the last 18 months across several countries to reduce our global footprint,” Parker said. “Production at Mercer is less than 7 percent of our global operations and we have available manufacturing capacity at other plants much closer to our customers and distribution facilities.”
Nortek plans to retain Research & Development, Technical Service, and Engineering functions in Mercer.
