NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – A vigil was held in Niles Sunday evening for the two victims who died in a house fire on Memorial Day.
Crews were called to the home on the 300 block of Scott Avenue. When firefighters got there, flames were shooting from an upstairs window.
The chief said four people were in the house at the time. Brad Crist, 54, and Jacob Crist, 15, died in the fire.
A somberness filled the air as family members, fire officials, the mayor of Niles and community members gathered to remember the victims.
“We should allow situations like this to bring us even more together, to love one another,” said Mike Cline with the Apostolic Pentecostal Church.
Family members said the other two victims, Diane Crist and Jesse Crist, are still recovering.
“Diane is on the mend, but it’s going to be months, I would imagine, with how much smoke she inhaled,” said cousin Mary Jo Blout. “Jesse, we still don’t know where he may end up, but he’s making small strides.”
Blout said the biggest help is through prayer and support.
“I think just everyone is trying to get through each day to make sure they’re going to be well and everybody in the family just keeps praying and supporting them how we can,” she said.
There were also three pets in the house at the time of the fire. Two of them died at the scene. The surviving dog, Bruno, was taken to a local animal hospital, but he later died.
