New Castle hosts annual "Shop with a Cop" event

Officers hosted about 100 elementary school students and 40 junior high students

NEW CASTLE, Pa. (WKBN) - Law enforcement officers in the New Castle area hosted their 20th annual holiday "Shop with a Cop" event on Thursday morning.

The event was held at the Walmart in New Castle, where officers hosted about 100 elementary school students and 40 junior high school students.

"I think it's exciting. I hid it from the kids for the last week because if you tell them anything, they drive me crazy and they get to meet cops," says Jamie Snare, a grandmother of one of the students.

Organizers say this was a great opportunity for kids to learn about sharing and giving.

Many students picked up on the idea of picking out gifts doe their siblings and parents rather than themselves.

"There's some great law enforcement folks that are out there. They raise money all year, and we chip in a little. It's so humbling seeing the kids out there actually shopping," says Tony Dattilio, marketing manager at Walmart.

Organizers say the local law enforcement raised $15,000 for the event and Walmart contributed another $15,000.
