YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – People who walk along the Mahoning River starting at the B&O Station might notice a new addition.
Volunteers with the Friends of the Mahoning River worked with Youngstown’s Parks and Recreation Department on Sunday to set up a metal safety railing along areas close to the river.
The group partly did this to prepare for the upcoming Riverfest in June, but one board member says it was needed to prevent people from falling in.
“I almost went in and a couple other people came close to the edge too. I mean, some of those places are right on the edge, you know, but it was very strong steel we put in,” said Don Rex from the Friends of the Mahoning River.
Rex said the next thing they would like to do is re-stain the dock. They are also planning to put in more steps to get down from the grassy area to the path.
Riverfest will be June 2 from noon to 5 p.m.
There will be performances, including Ballot Western Reserve, from noon to 1 p.m., Jungle Terry from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Leather and Lace from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Southside Academy Drum Circle from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
