Mathews School District decides not to use another Vienna police officer

Local News

After a Vienna Township school resource officer was charged with theft and drug-related offenses, Mathews Local Schools decided to use county deputies instead of Vienna police officers.

All but one of the board members voted in favor of hiring the Trumbull County Sherriff’s Office to fill the school resource officer position for the remainder of the school year.

Some board members said what Michael Sheehy is accused of doing, on top of other things they believe happened in the past, show a lack of leadership and reliability.

The one board member who voted no said spending thousands of extra dollars to hire the deputies doesn’t make sense.

“There is more officers because you automatically get a liaison with them, but you also have officers stopping and checking on the officer that we’ve hired,” said Tarin Brown, Mathews Local School Board president.

One board member estimated it will cost the school district an additional $10,000.

The sheriff’s deputies will officially start providing their services on Monday. There’s no word on who will serve as the school resource officer after both contracts are up on June 30.
