Derek Sanders was taken into custody and booked into the Trumbull County Jail

LIBERTY TWP., Ohio (WKBN) – A Youngstown man remains in the hospital being treated for injuries he received in a shooting. It happened at an apartment complex off of Hadley Avenue around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

It was a frightening morning for tenants at the Oak Tree Apartments who woke up to gunfire.

Dispatcher: “Trumbull County 911, where is your emergency?”
Caller: “Yeah, down here at Oak Tree Apartments, there’s been about four or five gunshots and it’s about two or three cars sitting out there. I think someone was shot.”

Caller: “I just heard five gunshots. I ain’t never heard gunshots out here.”

One of those calls came from Lewis Robinson, Jr., who was in bed when the shooting took place.

“I was asleep and like I said, it was real early in the morning, it was still dark,” he said.

Reporter Nadine Grimley: “Did you take a look out the window? What did you do?”
Lewis: “No. No, I didn’t. You don’t do that.”
Grimley: “It scared you that much, you didn’t want to look out?”
Lewis: “For real. Yes, ma’am, ‘cuz bullets ain’t got no names.”

“Quite a few shots were fired. In a complex like this, very easily could have went into a building and hurt innocent people,” said Liberty Township Police Chief Toby Meloro.

Police said when they arrived, Derek Sanders was still there. He was taken into custody and booked into the Trumbull County Jail on several charges including felonious assault.

Investigators believe he shot Dwayne Fields in the back over some sort of domestic issue involving the mother of Fields’ child. He was taken to the hospital and is in the intensive care unit.

“These kind of situations, knock on wood, are rare for Liberty Township. We have a very aggressive police department and we try to get any guns we can off people that are carrying them illegally,” Chief Meloro said.
