Mahoning County Children Services teams up with first responders to raise money

Local News

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Mahoning County Children Services held its fifth annual Above the Rim Basketball Event Friday.

“It’s the perfect way to wrap up National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April,” said Jennifer Kollar, event director and public information officer of children services.

Four teams competed, all made up of first responders.

The Youngstown Fire Department, Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, Boardman Fire Department and the Adult Parole Authority.

“It’s a great way that we raise awareness on why it’s so important to protect children,” she said.

Kollar said partnering with first responders to raise money for this cause made sense, since they play such a big role in protecting kids.

All the money raised will go into a fund for Children Services to help with different efforts in protecting children and licensing foster parents.

Kollar plans to continue the basketball fundraiser  for years to come.
