A Mother’s Day story of heartbreak and triumph — a local mother gives birth to twins after being pregnant for about six months.
For Riley Osborn, to take steps on her own or dunk a ball may be considered a miracle.
Her mother, Megan Osborn, gave birth to her and her twin sister Finley at just 23 weeks and six days. The girls weighed just a pound and a half.
“Super tiny. They could fit in Josh’s whole hand,” Megan said.
Unfortunately, Finley died just a few hours after she was born.
“I’ll never forget the NICU doctor saying she fought really hard to meet you guys,” Megan said.
It’s been quite the journey for Riley, who is now 2 years old, to get to where she is today.
“They had told us she probably wouldn’t survive the weekend. It was just looking so horrible, but she did. Just day after day she kept being there, which amazed them and amazed us,” Megan said.
Riley spent the first four months of her life in the intensive care unit for newborn babies. Her early delivery led to a brain bleed and cerebral palsy.
Doctors also initially though she may end up blind, deaf and unable to walk, talk or eat.
“We are up to eight steps by herself,” Megan said.
With the help of therapy from Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman, she’s improving her motor skills and getting stronger.
“She amazes us. She inspires us. We’re so thankful that she’s here,” Megan said.
