Fire trucks blocked State Route 558 to traffic while firefighters were on the scene

LEETONIA, Ohio (WKBN) – Investigators say a marijuana growing operation was discovered inside a Leetonia house that caught fire on Tuesday.

One person was sent to the hospital after an explosion and a fire that started in the basement of the Leetonia home around noon.

Crews blocked off a portion of State Route 558 to traffic while firefighters were on the scene. The house is at the end of a long driveway and sits behind the woods.

“Significant damage to the house, definitely not habitable. As far as time out, approximately a half an hour,” said Second Assistant Chief Frank Nulf, Columbiana Fire Department.

The state fire marshal was called to investigate the cause of the explosion, while the drug task force is also investigating the grow operation.

According to The Morning Journal, 48 marijuana plants were taken out of the home along with growing lights. The owner of the house is John Arsuffi.
