YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Police are investigating a shooting on Interstate 680 in Youngstown that left a victim with critical injuries.

Police were dispatched around 2:45 a.m. Sunday to I-680 southbound near the Glenwood Avenue exit in Youngstown for an SUV that had been shot, according to a news release from the police department.

Police found bullet holes and blood in and around the vehicle when they arrived but no victim.

Around the same time, YPD was alerted that a 21-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds had arrived at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

The victim is in critical condition.

Police learned that the victim had been removed from the shooting scene before EMTs arrived and had been dropped off at St. Elizabeth in a white Jeep by 18-year-old Jaylen Jackson and a juvenile, according to a news release. Police said both Jackson and the juvenile immediately left the area after dropping the victim off.

Police later located the white Jeep on Oregon Street on the city’s West Side. Officers attempted to stop the car but said it took off at a high speed, leading to a 21-minute pursuit into Liberty and Hubbard.

The vehicle eventually stopped at the McCartney Road and Oak Street extension intersection, where Jackson was arrested, according to the news release.

A dozen police cars from Campbell Police and YPD were on the scene.

Police arrested Jackson on a failure to comply with a police officer charge, with other charges pending. Police say he is not a suspect in the shooting.

Detectives are still investigating.

This is the second Youngstown shooting on I-680 in 2023, the first I-680 shooting killed two 19-year-olds near the Salt Springs exit.
