There’s a new pizza flavor at Pizza Joe’s thanks to students from Lakeview Middle School.
The Italian Bulldog pizza, named after the school district’s mascot, was created by 5th and 6th-grade students.
Creating the pizza is part of the Junior Achievement Innovation Challenge, which teaches students how to become entrepreneurs at a young age.
The organization comes up with a challenge every year and students from Trumbull County are tasked with coming up with an idea, a pitch and marketing plan for their invention. This year, the challenge was to come up with a pizza flavor and pitch it to Pizza Joe’s team.
Of all the entries from 43 teams, Pizza Joe narrowed it down to just one – the Lakeview Bulldogs with their Italian Bulldog pizza.
The pizza consists of butter sauce with shaved beef, roasted red peppers, tomatoes and mozzarella cheese.
While the challenge was fun, Junior Achievement Coordinator Kim Urig said it’s more than a pizza contest.
“I think this plants a seed of inspiration. Hey, I really can see my ideas come to life. I really do have an opportunity to be a business leader, a business developer, somebody who thinks forward. Those are the lessons Junior Achievement tries to impart with our students,” Urig said.
The Pizza Joe’s team said they were surprised at the excitement and how adventurous the pie flavors got.
“Seeing their engagement in the whole process, talking about food costs, talking about how they would market the pizza and just really that entrepreneurial spirit coming out in the kids. That’s really what we’re here to do is service our community because they support us every day,” said Katie DeToro, Pizza Joe’s chief marketing officer.
The Italian Bulldog was also entered into the Mahoning Valley Pizza Cook-off and won in the best gourmet pizza category.
The new pizza flavor can be purchased at any Trumbull County Pizza Joe’s location through April.
A portion of the sales will go to Junior Achievement.
